David Simmons and the team, with a huge helping of Sunday night nostalgia

You may have heard David Simmons on air presenting his show on Sunday evenings from 7-10, but what you may not know is that he is also one of the engineering team that helps build and maintain the systems behind the scenes that keep us broadcasting.

He’s been involved with Wey Valley Radio for a long time, but didn’t start out as a presenter.

He got into radio early in the 1960s, when he was a youngster. His father bought a shortwave radio, which he used to listen to radio stations from around the world.

It sparked his interest in amateur radio and the technology behind it, which he is still involved with to this day, and led to an interest in meteorology and the reception of weather satellites at home. Which then led to giving demonstrations to various groups of people and organisations.

While doing this, his good friend Paul Le Feuvre, who was a presenter on Wey Valley Radio, asked Dave to come and help him on his Sunday evening show, which he willingly did and learnt how to present radio programmes and work the equipment in the radio station, which then led onto the engineering side of the radio station.

Then he started doing the engineering for Derek Seaton. Derek would do the presenting, and David would work the equipment, but ended up standing in for Derek, and that led to his current Sunday evening slot.

He also helps out Dean Phillips with the ‘More Than Just Movies’ show on a Saturday night.
