Dean Phillips

Background

Dean Phillips is one of Alton’s most familiar faces. A former town mayor and now chair of the Alton Community Centre, he’s spent years championing the town and the people in it.

His connection to Wey Valley Radio goes right back to its return to the airwaves. On a Thursday morning in July 2017, with the revitalised station broadcasting on 101.1 FM across the GU34 area for the first time in seven years, it was Dean — then Mayor of Alton — who opened proceedings with a hearty “Hello Alton,” declaring the station a real asset to the town before David Way sent the first record on its way. It was a fitting role for someone who has always believed in giving local people, groups and organisations a voice.

Away from the studio, Dean is the founder of PS (Perpetual Starlight), a baby loss charity he launched in 2024 after his own experience of loss. Officially unveiled at a charity ball at Old Thorns, PS works to bring the kind of specialist support offered through North Hampshire’s hospitals to the Alton area and beyond — from one-to-one sessions with specialists to support packs for parents at every stage. The charity also backs the long-running Forget Me Not Fund, and Wey Valley Radio was among the organisations supporting its inaugural event.

On Saturday nights, Dean brings all that warmth and enthusiasm to More Than Just Movies, where his love of film and the music behind it takes centre stage — alongside his team (including David Simmons) and a rotating cast of guests. Expect strong opinions, the odd surprise, and a genuine love of the movies.
